Cut £100 off your energy bill with simple change, says expert

The cost of energy in the UK has reached new highs and many households are spending a fortune on their monthly bills. But Uswitch director of regulation Richard Nuedegg says people can save money by making a few simple changes to their boiler.

Boilers have either a dial or digital screen with numbers on it, and these can help reduce the amount of gas you use, according to Mr Nuedegg. He said the numbers indicate the flow temperature for the device.

Most boilers have two dials or sets of digital screens, one for heating and another for hot water. Mr Nuedegg said boilers are usually set to a default temperature between 75-80 degrees, reports the Daily Star.

He told the Sun: "For combi boilers, the recommended output temperature for the radiators is 75oC and at least 60oC for water, which is the temperature that kills legionella bacteria. People with a condensing combi boiler may be able to turn down the flow temperature to save themselves some money on their energy bills."

Legionella is a bacteria which grows in standing water and flourishes at temperatures between 20-45 degrees, so it's crucial to keep your boiler's flow temperature high enough to avoid it. But if it dropped to below 60 degrees, you could see energy consumption reduce by nine per cent which could help you save £100 per year on bills.
