Customers split over Fish and Chip shop's new vegan product as tofu option causes controversy

Customer opinions been mixed after a Fish and Chip shop launched a new vegan product. Papa's Fish and Chips recently created their battered tofu dished dubbed 'To-Fish' - which has split their customers.

The chain, which has restaurants across the UK, has built a reputation as one of the nation best chippies. In 2015, they opened the world's largest fish and chip shop in Hull.

Two years later, they won the title of 'Britain's Best Fish & Chips' following a search from the BBC. Now, Papa's is back in the headlines as their unique new product has caused a stir on social media, reports Hull Live.

Announcing the new menu addition on Facebook, Papa's posted: "This is To-Fish (battered Tofu), our Vegan alternative. It's delicious."

The announcement caused an ruckus among customers who commented on the post with a variety of opinions on the 'To-Fish'. One customer, Kim, commented: "Chips and mushy peas look amazing, the rest can go in the bin.

"I've tried tofu cooked various ways and it's just tasteless. Proper piece of fish needed!"

Thelma was equally annoyed, commenting: "I like the REAL fish and chips, I don't think I would ever consider eating something like that, why would I give up eating fish for tofu that makes NO sense to me."

Matthew however was more interested in the sides, writing: "Wow, a lot of people in the comments are really offended by tofu. I'm more put off by the mushy peas!"

Will felt as though his fellow Fish and Chip shop patrons were unduly outraged by the 'To-Fish'. He commented: "There's a lot of people getting in a right flap on here about 'gah, I want REAL fish and chips, this is woke nonsense gone mad humpf humpf'.

"If you don't like it, don't buy it. Problem solved, market forces to the rescue if *nobody* wants it.

"Papa's aren't going to stop doing 'real' fish, they're just doing this now too and doesn't exclude vegetarian or vegan friends from going there at all. Makes perfect sense for Papa's to broaden their customer base.

"Just because someone else might like it (hell, I'll give it a go, fried tofu can be amazing) is no reason to fly into an incandescent rage."
