Legendary Edinburgh club Opium changes its name as customers give their reaction

One of Edinburgh’s oldest rock clubs is changing its name.

The venue, currently named Opium, opened in Cowgate around the summer of 1990 and has been a leading rock and metal venue in the capital ever since.

However, the establishment decided upon a name change and has made an announcement on Facebook today that they will revert to a previous name - Legends.

The night club was reimagined in the 2000s, when Legends and another club, Attic, merged together to create Opium.

A spokesperson for Opium suggested the Cowgate venue was being renamed to avoid being banned on Facebook over due to the name's association with Class A drugs.

Speaking on Facebook they said: “Big changes are a coming, watch this space for Legends Launch Day. The Final Count Down Begins.

“At least Facebook won’t keep taking the page down for drug references!”

Excited punters congratulated the rock establishment online but some were less than happy about the name change - despite the night spot returning to what it was called previously.

One woman said: “Opium never changing was the one thing in life i thought I could rely on!”

Another added: “Why is this even a thing? No way anyone's going to start calling Opium, Legends.”
