Customers help pay for Nottingham takeaway to feed NHS workers and elderly

Nottingham takeaway owners have helped fuel NHS staff with pizza during the Covid-19 pandemic - with generous supporters offering to foot the bill.

Family business Nad Grill, run by husband and wife team Nadeem Shahzad and Rukhsana Rafi, have made sure workers at the Queen's Medical Centre and City Hospital have been fed, in partnership with Himmah food bank, which has been sending essential supplies such as milk and bread.

Ambulance workers, care home assistants and walk-in centre staff have also been treated to a free takeaway from the business in Hucknall Road, Carrington.

The couple would have done it out of their own pockets but customers have offered to pay. Among them was Nadine Clark, who said she'd happily phone an order through and ask for it to be delivered to the NHS.

And when one woman asked if they'd deliver from Carrington to staff at a dementia care home in Ruddington, they said: "Nothing is impossible."

A Go Fund Me page has now been set up to raise money for food packages and other essential supplies for pensioners, struggling families and the homeless.

Rukhsana said: "We would like to provide free food for the NHS staff, health cafe assistants and their families as a way of showing our appreciation and gratitude for their hard work.

"None of this would have possible without our friends, our loyal customers and the Nottingham community and my wonderful children who have been working so hard with us to help the ones who struggling especially in these difficult times.

"There is so much that needs to be and doesn't matter how much you it never feels like you've done enough. There so many reasons as why we do what do but mostly because we feel others' pain and don't want anyone struggling."
