Video footage has emerged of shoppers scrambling around on the floor of a branch of Tesco and jostling with each other for food.
The video is said to show scenes at a Tesco branch in Weston Favell, Northampton, after an employee delivers produce to a shelf used to display discounted and reduced foods.
A staff member is heard telling people to “Move back! Move back now, otherwise I’m taking it away” before someone says “Go” and the small crowd dive in. Over the noise of the scrabble an onlooker can be heard saying: “I actually can’t believe this. I actually cannot believe this.”
The person who is said to have filmed the incident, Johnny Lester of Blackthorn, told the Northampton Chronicle that he was concerned that someone was going to get hurt.
Lester, who said he took the footage on Monday, added: “There was a little girl you can see in the video and I thought ‘If this kicks off she is going to get hurt.’”
A spokesperson for Tesco said: “The safety of our customers and colleagues is of paramount importance to us. The manager of the store has conducted a thorough investigation and will take steps to prevent a similar situation happening again.
“We are continually trying to improve the way we deal with surplus food – this includes making better reductions earlier in the day to make it easier for customers and colleagues in the evening.”
