Customer turns up at Irish menswear store with 18-year-old gift card

An Irish clothing store has honoured a customer's gift card 18 years after it was bought.

Martin Fahy Menswear in Loughrea, Co Galway came across a shopper on Monday who presented them a voucher they were given for their 21st birthday - back in 2002.

Nearly two decades later the customer found the card while moving house, and decided to cash in.

The menswear store said they had no problem with honouring the voucher, as it had no expiry date.

They wrote on Facebook on Tuesday: "One for the records....

"Yesterday a customer produced this Gift Card from 2002! He found it recently when moving house. Got it for his 21st birthday.

"Naturally we honoured it - our Gift Cards do not go out of date (we leave that kind of practise to the gift card companies).

"It pays to Shop Local!"

Last year new laws ensuring that gift cards and vouchers remain valid for at least five years after purchase came into effect.

Although most come without an expiry date, some companies had been placing a limit as short as six months on their vouchers.
