Customer baffled as Tesco place gay magazine in 'hobby' section

A gay Tesco customer mocked Tesco for putting Attitude magazine in the 'hobby' section - pointing out being LGBT is not a 'pastime'.

Jo Nice had been food shopping when she spotted the gay lifestyle publication on the top shelf of the 'hobbies' section, next to photography and record collector magazines.

The baffled 42-year-old took a photo and shared it online, ridiculing the supermarket giant with the caption: "Fancy a new hobby? Record collecting? Photography? How about being gay? Nice one, Tesco."

After posting the image on Facebook, it attracted more than 40 comments, with social media users joking it was the 'best hobby ever'.

Jo, from Colchester, Essex, said: "I had a bit of a laugh. I was taking my mum for her grocery shop and looking to see if they had any tattoo magazines and I thought 'maybe tattooing is a hobby?'

"Then I spotted Attitude in the top righthand corner and thought it was funny. I posted on Tesco's page to make a joke.

"Looking at the other headings they had, I couldn't see where it would fit.

"I thought maybe 'lifestyle' but there wasn't that option. There was women's weeklies and sport, that sort of thing.

"The first comment immediately was 'what's wrong with being gay?' Well, nothing. But it's not my pastime?

"I'm more inclined to laugh at it and think it's a funny place to put it."

After posting online, Jo was inundated with comments from other members of the LGBT+ community who found the photo hilarious - while others appeared to miss the joke.

Shane Hutch asked 'and what’s wrong with being gay' while Jo replied 'nothing, but it isn't a hobby'.

Heidi Moran said: "Pretty cool hobby though."

Chelsea Gardner said: "I think some people have seriously missed the joke here."

Jake Stevens said: "Best hobby ever. It's fun and it's free!"

A Tesco spokesperson said: "Many of our lifestyle magazines are merchandised alongside our hobby magazines. The section header reflects the fact that the majority of titles in that area are classified as hobbies."
