Curtis Riley led Giants in 2018 performance-based pay

The NFL announced its performance-based pay and veteran distributions on Thursday, and New York Giants safety Curtis Riley led the team in both regards.

In fact, Riley was one of league’s greatest beneficiaries of these programs, taking home a combined $425,336 ($304,784 in performance-based pay and $120,552 from the veteran pool). That was good for 15th overall.

In addition to Riley, cornerback B.W. Webb received a combined $414,592 ($295,905 performance-based and $118,688 veteran pool), while offensive tackle Chad Wheeler received a combined $398,804 ($295,242 performance-based and $103,563 veteran pool).

The performance-based pay system, which is part of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA), compensates players, including rookies, based on their playing time and production in comparison to their salary.

The veteran pool operates similarly, but with two major changes, According to the NFLPA, “players with zero accrued seasons are not eligible to receive distributions” and “if the player’s full-season base salary is less than $1 million, an additional amount will be imputed so that the player’s base salary equals $1 million.”

This year, the NFLPA dedicated $140.88 million in performance-based pay benefits and another $48 million to the veteran pool ($1.5 million per club).
