Curtis Main says Saints must improve in breaking down stubborn teams

By Kyle Gunn

Curtis Main insists that St Mirren need to get used to breaking teams down after losing 1-0 at home to a stuffy Dundee side last weekend.

Saints had 62 percent of the ball but they couldn’t break James McPake’s side down after Scotland under-21 midfielder Max Anderson’s early strike which gave the visitors all three points.

Despite the former Aberdeen striker partnering fellow attacker Eamonn Brophy up front the Buddies just couldn’t break the resistance of a spirited Dee defensive unit.

And Main, who thinks this may be an issue which could repeat itself a lot in the coming weeks and months ahead, says it’s something that they will be trying to rectify in training.

Speaking exclusively to Express Sport, Main said: “Nothing really, not one standout thing. I just think they made it difficult from the start of the game and we never really created any chances. I think the bottom line is we didn’t do enough to win.

“Yeah, something we’ll probably face on a number of occasions moving forward, especially when teams come to our place. We’ve been playing pretty well recently, so it’s something we’ll have to work on in training.

“Teams coming and making it very difficult, trying to break them down and create more chances, so we can win the games.”

Main was hoping to get back to winning ways following the draw against Motherwell last Wednesday and before that the narrow home defeat against Rangers.

The Englishman was honest enough to acknowledge the fact that the Paisley side did not really get out of first gear at any point during the full 90 minutes.

The trips do not get any easier for Goodwin’s men, with a trip to Perth to face Callum Davidson‘s Cup double winning St Johnstone at the weekend.

But providing they can recapture the performances of the recent six game unbeaten run, the 29-year-old sees no reason why the Buddies can’t go to McDiarmid Park and come home with all three points

He continued:“Very frustrating, I don’t think we reached the levels we’ve been at for the last couple of games. Conceded a sloppy goal and Dundee made it really tough to to get back into the game. We never managed to break them down and score a goal, so yeah, just frustrated.”

“I think so, I think we were very good for large parts last Wednesday night at Motherwell and Saturday we never got into our rhythm and performed as well as we have been or we certainly can.

“I think we just need to put this one away and work hard this week and just go into the next game with a lot of confidence still and be positive about it.

It’s not easy, it’s always a difficult place to go. But, like I say, if we work hard through the week, and carry our recent performances forward. Forget about this one and take that into that game. I think we go there and pick three points up.”
