Curtis Jones to follow in Steven Gerrard's footsteps after changing Liverpool shirt number

Curtis Jones will wear the No.17 shirt for Liverpool from next season, it has been revealed by the club.

The 19-year-old will make the switch from his current No.48 shirt to the new number for the 2020/21 campaign.

Jones made his Premier League debut for Liverpool back in December and scored his first league goal for the club this month in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa. He also scored a sensational goal in the FA Cup at Anfield against rivals Everton.

The No.17 is particularly significant because it was previously worn by club legend Steven Gerrard during the early part of his Liverpool career, while Steve McManaman also donned the number.

Jones has enjoyed a breakthrough for the Reds this season and was rewarded with a new long-term contract earlier this month.

Upon signing the contract extension, midfielder Jones explained his delight.

“For me, as everyone knows, it's massive.

“It's my boyhood club and it's the whole of my family's club as well, so for me it's huge.

“I think the environment and stuff is all positive and keeps me as positive as I can. Of course, we're working with a great manager and around the best team in the world, so for me it was easy and [I'm] extremely proud.”
