Curtis Jones responds to Sadio Mane cross Adam Lallana comparison and reveals Liverpool approach

Curtis Jones says he will happily accept a claim that he is a cross between Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana.

The Liverpool midfielder has won plenty of praise for his performances since breaking into Jurgen Klopp's side thanks to the confidence and flair he displays.

Speaking to Jones on talkSPORT, former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy revealed a youth coach had compared him to Mane and Lallana in terms of how he plays.

It left Jones stunned but he said he will happily take that comparison.

"Wow," he said. "I've not really ever compared myself to another player.

"I've always said my style of play is similar to players who like to have a bit of flair in the game and be confident on the ball.

"To be referred to as Mane and Lallana? Wow.

"Mane is just a different level in terms of how he plays, I think he finished fourth in the Ballon d'Or.

"I spent two years around Lallana and the stuff he used to do in training, I used to be blown away by it.

"To be referred to as those two, I'll take it."

Jones is one of a number of young players breaking into Liverpool's first-team as a hectic schedule sees Klopp rotate his squad and hand more chances to youth prospects.

It is a testament to everyone at the Liverpool Academy and arguably part of a legacy of Steven Gerrard's brief stint as under-18s and under-19s boss for the Reds' that so many promising young players are now part of Klopp's senior set-up.

Jones revealed that Gerrard's approach as a coach was different to the personality he displayed on the pitch for Liverpool.

Jones explained: "I think to how he looked on the pitch, with that swagger and being a hard man, a warrior on the pitch, off the pitch he became a manager.

"Don't get me wrong, you could tell that you didn't want to cross him or upset him, but in terms of how he was with the team and us being young lads, he was great.

"He was chilled and laid back and he told us to refer to him as Steven rather than Gerrard, so it was comfortable."

Speaking about his own approach to breaking into Liverpool's first-team as a young player, Jones said he feels it is important to offer Klopp something different to what other midfielders can bring to the side.

He said: "I just go and play really but, for any young lad trying to get into a team, I think you have to have courage and confidence.

"Try and come up with something that someone else who's in your position doesn't do a lot of.

"People will look at our team and see the likes of Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner and see how hard they work and defend and then serve Mo Salah the ball.

"It's like Mo, Sadio Mane, Bobby Firmino and Diogo Jota are the ones getting the goals, so I'm trying to bring something different from the other centre midfielders."
