Currys and Uber launch tech takeaway service delivering emergency gadgets in 30 minutes

High street chain Currys is launching a tech takeaway service which will deliver emergency gadgets like phone chargers and printer ink in 30 minutes.

Aimed at those working from home who either run out of vital equipment or face the frustration of smartphones and laptops which fail to function, the retailer has signed a deal with Uber to race to the rescue.

The three month trial across London from November 15 will go nationwide if it’s a hit.

Workers in a hurry can choose from 1,800 tech products such as headphones, laptops and even small coffee-makers for the door-to-door service with a delivery fee of £5.

Currys said items weighing up to 7kg “with set dimensions” that could easily fit into a courier’s bag. would qualify for the service.

Online orders will be taken up to two hours before stores close with products on the doorstep in as little as half an hour.

Mark Allsop, chief operating officer at Currys said: “The world has shifted to a hybrid way of working and more customers are demanding greater convenience and speedier delivery to get their hands on tech.

“As the UK’s number one tech retailer, we want to make it easy to shop, for all of our customers. We want customers to get products in their hands and homes as soon as they want them - right now, with super-fast delivery.”

Currys’ announcement came as it revealed electrical sales were up by 21% compared with pre-pandemic levels two years ago but dipped by 1% year-on-year when demand soared during lockdown as millions home schooled and turned kitchens and bedrooms into makeshift offices.

Overall like-for-like sales were up 15% in the six months to the end of October.

And it also unveiled a £75 million share buy back scheme following strong sales.
