Curry and a beer! Former rugby coach tells England star Tom that 'drinks are on us' after World Cup Final

The youngest member of England's World Cup rugby squad Tom Curry can expect a hero’s welcome when he returns to his boyhood club, his former coach said on Wednesday.

Dave Potts, president of Crewe and Nantwich Rugby Club, said “the drinks will be on us” when the flanker visits, whatever the outcome of Saturday’s final against South Africa in Japan.

Mr Potts, 75, coached Curry and his twin Ben, now 21, after the family moved north from Hounslow, west London. “It would mean a million things to our club if we could say we had a World Cup winner come from us — we’re a family club,” he said.

The Curry brothers’ father David played for the Crewe and Nantwich first team and also coached the boys at the club and at Bishop Heber High School in Cheshire. Tom and Ben now play for the Sale Sharks.

“We’ve had players before that have played at a high level, but we’re most proud of the brothers and their dad,” said Mr Potts. “They were a class above even from a young age.

"I wouldn’t like to say who the best out of the two brothers was, and I don’t want to get myself in trouble.

“They’re two wonderful lads and still when they’re home they come down to the pub.”
