South Coast fires LIVE: Windy, hot weather building across region

A minor respite has allowed authorities to prepare for dangerous conditions expected on the South Coast on Friday.

There is a severe weather warning that a vigorous cold front will affect southern parts of New South Wales on Friday afternoon and evening, extending into central areas overnight before weakening.

Damaging winds averaging 55 to 65 km/h, with gusts around 90 km/h, are possible over parts of inland New South Wales late Friday afternoon/evening, and the Illawarra coastal fringe during Friday night.

If you can still avoid non-essential travel, that's best. If you must travel, take extreme care, be prepared for conditions to change at short notice and follow emergency services' and traffic crews' directions.
