PYEONGCHANG -- A day after their historic podium finish, the Japan women curlers savored the joy of taking the bronze medal.
Japan beat Britain 5-3 in Saturday's third-place match to become the first Japanese curlers to win a medal. "Right after the match was over, I couldn't believe we had won," said Yurika Yoshida at a press conference on Sunday. "Now the reality is slowly sinking in."
Japan advanced to the semifinals with a 5-4 record in round-robin play, ranking fourth among the different teams. They lost to South Korea 8-7 in the final four, but rebounded to beat Britain for the bronze.
"There were both good and bad times during this competition," said Chinami Yoshida, Yurika's sister. "But all of us looked forward and believed in ourselves," she said.
Yumi Suzuki said, "We played like ourselves in the final two games."
"We proved that what we've been doing as a team was not wrong," skip Satsuki Fujisawa said.
