Curfew gives thieves free run in Ahmedabad

AHMEDABAD: Curfew during night hours has ensured that 'aam Amdavadis' stay off the roads, but same cannot be said for burglars. Though cops have been deployed at most nooks and corners of the city to ensure that curfew is strictly maintained, burglars struck at a jewellery shop in Vasna and a cellphone shop in Vastrapur in two separate incidents on Sunday night.

Paldi resident Rajesh Shah, who owns a jewellery shop, told Vasna police that burglars had stolen ornaments worth Rs 3.45 lakh from his store. The 47-year-old said he closed his store around 8.30pm on Sunday and opened it around 9am on Monday. "The lights were on. I walked in and saw a huge hole in the wall at the back of the shop. The thieves had made off with silver was kept in the showcase. It weighed around 7kg," Shah told police.

CCTV footage from the area showed two burglars breaking the wall, entering the shop and fleeing with the booty. .

In the Vastrapur incident, burglars broke into the shop and fled with Rs 37,400 in cash and seven cellphones worth Rs 1.29 lakh.
