Cup match stopped as helicopter lands on pitch after injured man, 21, rescued after rock slip

A football match was halted after a helicopter landed on the pitch, moments after it rescued an injured man following a rock slip.

Almost a dozen brave lifeboat volunteers also came to the stricken man's aid after he injured his ankle on rocks north of Hartley Bay, near Seaton Sluice in Northumberland.

After the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter winched him to safety, it landed on a nearby pitch during Seaton Sluice FC's cup clash with North Shields Community Christians FC.

The match was paused as the injured man was transferred into an ambulance and taken to hospital.

He'd attempted to climb up a cliff face. However, realising the danger he turned around - only to slip as he returned to the cliff.

"Although in good spirits, the casualty was in a challenging location: at the bottom of a 40ft cliff and 500 metres from the closest access steps across very slippery rocks," stated a Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade spokesperson.

"Sea conditions also meant that an extraction by Lifeboat for a casualty in a stretcher would be very difficult to complete."

The injured man had been on the rocks for almost two hours when the helicopter - dispatched from Prestwick Airport - arrived at 2.15pm on Saturday, before flying onto the pitch.

Paramedics also attended the incident, which was the 40th lifeboat callout so far this year.

"Although the team train regularly for working with helicopters, it is relatively rare that we work alongside one on an incident at the coast, and today involved using a number of skills including deploying a smoke flare to help the helicopter check wind direction and speed, and also manning a hi-line during the winching process," added the spokesperson.

"We also wish to thank the members of Seaton Sluice Football Club and North Shields Community Christians Football Club who paused their cup match to allow the helicopter to land and transfer the casualty to the ambulance."
