Cup kings St Johnstone book Hampden semi-final return date as double winners down Dundee

St Johnstone dumped Dundee out of the Premier Sports Cup in a pulsating quarter-final tie at Dens.

Saints are the current cup holders and they showed they will not give up their hold on the trophy they won by beating Livingston in February without a fight.

Shaun Rooney - who had netted the winners as the Perth side lifted both cups last season - broke the deadlock in the second half with Ali Crawford putting the icing on the cake for the Perth men.

Saints can now look forward to a return to Hampden for the semi-final but this time, unlike last season, they will be allowed to have their fans inside the National Stadium.

The result though was a bitter pill for Dundee to swallow with the Dark Blues, who are currently propping up the Premiership table, having loads of chances but they were denied time after time by Saints keeper Zander Clark.

The the deadlock was finally broken in the 70th minute. A Liam Craig corner from the right was not dealt with by the Dundee defence and the ball fell to Rooney, who hit a shot on the turn past Adam Legzdins.

The travelling support were then celebrating one more in the 84th minute when Booth cut the ball back for Crawford who calmly slotted home past Legzdins from the edge of the box for his first goal for the club.

That was the cue for a mass exodus from the home fans with Dundee now facing a daunting league game against champions Rangers on Saturday,
