Cuomo Impeachment Decision Imminent As NY Assembly Nears End Of Probe

Topline

New York legislators, who have spent months investigating allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, said Thursday their inquiry is nearly complete, meaning a decision is imminent on whether they will move to impeach the embattled governor.

Key Facts

The New York State Assembly committee conducting the impeachment investigation sent a letter to Cuomo, obtained by multiple media outlets, notifying him that they are “nearing completion.”

The legislators asked the governor to submit “any additional evidence or written submissions” he “would like the committee to consider before its work concludes” by Aug. 13.

“The Assembly will soon consider potential articles of impeachment,” lawyers representing the Democrat-run committee said in the letter.

Key Background

The legislators, who had previously been criticized for the slow pace of their probe, announced they were expediting their work earlier this week after New York State Attorney General Letitia James released her office’s bombshell report detailing allegations against Cuomo from 11 different women, including current and former employees. The district attorneys for Manhattan, Westchester and Albany County have all since launched criminal investigations into the governor, who has continued to deny the allegations and has shown no sign of stepping down.

What To Watch For

If the Assembly Judiciary Committee recommends impeachment, the full New York State Assembly will go back into session and vote on the articles of impeachment. A majority of state Assembly members are in support of beginning impeachment proceedings, according to the Associated Press. If articles of impeachment are approved by a majority in the state Assembly, a trial will take place in the state Senate, where a High Court of Impeachment will be tasked with deciding the governor’s fate. In addition to the state’s 63 senators, this cohort must include seven judges from the Court of Appeals, and a two-thirds majority of the combined bodies must vote to convict. Notably, the seven judges from the Court of Appeals are all Cuomo appointees.

Surprising Fact

Only one governor in New York’s history has been impeached: Gov. William Sulzer, who was ousted in 1913.
