Cumnock man spends thousands of pounds on spectacular Christmas display

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas - especially if you stay in and around Cumnock.

For Craig Montgomery, who is an office manager at G&C Double Glazing Repair, has spent the last three months planning his Christmas lights display.

And, following three weeks of installation - and preparation - it all came to a colourful and mesmerising climax at the weekend, when the grand switch-on took place at his home in the cul-de-sac of Holmburn Road.

Craig’s amazing display includes thousands of L.E.D lights in all different colours, silhouettes and acrylic figures including Polar Bears, Penguins, full size reindeers and even a sleigh scene.

Speaking before the big switch-on Craig, aged 20, said this year’s display will be his best ever.

He said: “At the moment I am in the process setting up the display for turn on at end of the month, which takes me three weeks to complete.

“This year will be on a larger scale and contains an expanded winter scene with the more animals.

“I’ve now been doing this for over five years and this is the biggest and brightest yet.

“With me being addicted to the Christmas light obsession, I budget £1,000 per year to replace old and add new to the display and I start planning as early as August.”

Craig, who lives with mum and dad Paul and Maria and little sister, Joanne, wants the entire Ayrshire community to come visit and enjoy the Christmas spirit.

And he also tipped his hat to the man who helped fuel his passion for festive lights displays.

He explained: “There’s a chap called Alex Weir who lives down the road and he’s the one who really inspired me to do this. He showed me how to do it.

“I’ve been doing this since 2011 and I’m addicted to it.

“Even though I’ve got a few things just now, next year it’ll be even bigger.

“You always find room when you see something you like.

“When you see somebody look at the display and smile then you know it’s been worth it.

“I’ve been planning this since August and spent the last three weekends setting it all up and some of my suppliers are based as far afield as Kent.”

With the display now fully operational Craig is encouraging everyone to pop along to his home and take a peek at his jaw-dropping festive scene.

He added: “The display will be on every night from 5pm to 10pm every night right through until January.”
