Cumbernauld Colts' Sean Winter: Celebration "not a get it right up you" to East Kilbride

Sean Winter insists his exuberant celebration against East Kilbride wasn't a "get it right up you" moment to his former club.

The Cumbernauld winger came back to haunt Kilby in yesterday's 2-0 win at K-Park, netting a first half penalty and enjoying a passionate celebration in front of the home fans.

Winter spent almost six years at Kilby, winning two Lowland League titles and countless cups before falling out of favour under Stevie Aitken last season.

So it was a sweet moment for the 34-year-old yesterday when he set his side on the way to a shock victory that ended a run of nine games without a win - and put a dent in his former side's title aspirations.

However, Winter - who was handed the captaincy in the absence of Stephen O'Neill - insisted there was nothing mean spirited in his celebration, which he had planned on doing before the match.

He said: "It wasn't the fact it was against East Kilbride, it was the fact that we've been on a bad run.

"It's more what it means to the club to get this result. It was more relief than anything else.

"It wasn't a get it up you East Kilbride or anything like that.

"It was a relief that we got off on the front foot and I could tell once we scored we were going to get something out of the game.

"It was a good moment for me.

"I like scoring and I was just delighted for Cumbernauld.

"I've got nothing against East Kilbride. I absolutely loved my time there and I've never ruled out going back there.

"It's just unfortunate I wasn't getting games. I'm 34 now and I want to be playing football and Cumbernauld gave me that chance.

"I'm playing every week and I'm starting to get my fitness back."

The result saw Cumbernauld climb to 14th in the Lowland League and delivered their first win since an opening day victory against Vale of Leithen in July.

Winter arrived at the club with ambitious plans to challenge for the title this term and while he admits that is now out of the question, he hopes the display against EK will be a turning point for James Orr's side this season and lead to silverware by the end of it.

He added: "We are miles better than the league shows. We've had some terrible results where we've been absolutely scudded by teams 6-1 or 5-1.

"We've been conceding goals left, right and centre so I knew that if we could give ourselves a solid foundation at the back to build on, we would start picking up results.

"I think we thoroughly deserved the win.

"It's got to be a turning point for us.

"There's been a bad atmosphere in the changing room. I've never experienced anything like it in football because I've never been on the kind of run we've just been on, being so far down in the league and fighting for our lives.

"Everything starts to go against you and every week adds extra pressure on to you.

"We needed something to change our season and hopefully this is the thing that does that.

"The damage is done in terms of competing at the top of the league, but we can kick on and try and challenge for a couple of cups, finish as high up in the league as we can."
