Cumbernauld Colts eye up future Lowland League promotion fight after signing spree

Cumbernauld Colts could be a new signings away from a promotion push after a mid-season signing spree, according to co-boss Craig McKinley.

Management duo McKinley and James Orr have been busy in the last two weeks adding veteran defender Scott Gibson, forward Billy Mortimer and promising ex-Rangers kid Dylan Dykes.

The gaffer admits there could be more new recruits on the way but is delighted to get early business underway with next term in the Lowland League in mind.

“We are building for next season now,” he told Lanarkshire Live Sport.

Blly Mortimer has joined from Queen's Park (Ian Cairns (Queen's Park))

“At this stage of the season we have the League Cup section to end the season which we have won before, so we are keen to be involved.

“However, we are really looking to build the right squad for next season and that’s why we have brought these lads in early.

“It gets us off to a good start as we try to bring in the right calibre of player for where we want to go next season.

“There is potentially a few more that we can add. Myself and James are having talks with players just now but it might not be before the end of the season.”

He continued: “Without getting ahead of ourselves we hope these players will see us challenge further up the table.

“Scott Gibson and Billy Mortimer from Queen’s Park are excellent signings.

“Dylan Dykes as well is another great signing; it’s huge for the club to be able to bring in players of his callibre.

“To get them in immediately is a boost.

“We don’t expect there to be sweeping changes in the summer but inevitably one or two will leave.

“If we can bring in another two or three lads this summer we will be really positive going into the new season.

“We will finish this season in mid-table, when we had been used to competing for the top four.

The league is so competitive but if we get our work done early and bring in the right kind of player we can aim for the top four and see where it takes us.”
