Cumbernauld Colts can challenge top Lowland League sides, says assistant boss

Cumbernauld Colts assistant Craig McKinlay says they’re in a good place to challenge with the top teams in this season’s Lowland League.

McKinlay says the Broadwood club aren’t getting ahead of themselves and knows other clubs like East Kilbrdie and Kelty Hearts have bigger spending power, but wants Colts to compete at the top end.

He said: “We feel in a good place, I’m happy with how things have gone and how we’re looking.

“We’re feeling really good about ourselves. We’ll see how the season starts, and then we’ll start having a look at where the expectations are.

“We have internal aspirations, which we will keep internal for the time being, but we hope to do really well and compete with the top teams in the league.”

McKinlay, whose side kick-off on Saturday away to new boys Bo’ness United, added: “We’re not getting ahead of ourselves.

"We’re very happy with the squad we have, we also know how strong this league is going to be, with the money and spending power that clubs have, so it will be interesting to see how all of those teams shape up, as well as ourselves.

“In bringing these players in you would expect them to be very strong this season, but we will just have to take that as we see it when we come to play them.

“Saturday is a tough test.

"Bo’ness are a strong side, but all we can do is worry about ourselves.”
