Cumbernauld beating Troon more pleasing than stunning Cumnock, says boss Tony Fraser

Cumbernauld United boss Tony Fraser insists last night's hard-fought win over Troon pleased him more than stunning Cumnock last month.

David Cameron's first half effort proved enough to see off the hosts and return United to winning ways after a run of back-to-back defeats.

Having started their West of Scotland Premier campaign with a wins over Rossvale and Cumnock, as well as a draw with Clydebank, Fraser was thrilled to see his side bounce back from losing to Largs and Irvine Meadow.

They are now eighth in the table and six points off leaders Kilwinning.

And Fraser said: "That result was more pleasing than the Cumnock, Clydebank and Rossvale ones just because of the attitude they showed.

"It was important that we bounced back after two defeats.

"We'd made a great start with the the two wins and a draw, especially going to two very difficult venues in Clydebank and Cumnock.

"And I felt on the Monday before the Largs game [a 4-0 defeat at Guy's Meadow], the players were starting to take their foot off it a wee bit, believing their own hype.

"I tried to warn them that it wouldn't work and we got punished - and rightly so.

"But they've learned a valuable lesson from that night, so it's probably not the worst thing that's ever happened to us.

"We don't ever want to lose a game, but in a strange way it has been a bit of a blessing.

"Last night they were back doing what we want them to do. They were hungry again, they were after everything again, fighting and scratching for everything."

In the summer Fraser's side took a chance on amateur striker David Cameron, who joined the club from Caledonian League side East Kilbride YM.

But after impressing in pre-season, Cameron found the net for the second time in the West of Scotland League with the vital goal.

Fraser has been thoroughly impressed with his new recruit and was thrilled to see him get back on the scoresheet after scoring in their opening day win over Rossvale.

"David has been absolutely outstanding for us," Fraser enthused.

"The club has watched him numerous times before I had even joined the club and I know Clydebank had an interest in him as well.

"We made contact with Moff [Gordon Moffat, the Clydebank boss] and he was of the opinion that if we could get him, take him.

"And he's been absolutely brilliant since he came up.

"He's a real goal threat and he scored in every game of pre-season.

"I was delighted for him last night because the players were saying he was on a bit of a dry spell, so it was good for him. He's a great lad.

"He's big, big boy, he gets himself into good positions, makes late runs into the box and he always seems to arrive there in time.

"He's got a knack of getting big goals for us."

United continue their WOSL Premier campaign on Saturday when they host high-flying Darvel.
