Cumberland Road partially reopens after river wall collapse two months ago

Cumberland Road in Bristol has partially reopened following a river wall collapse earlier this year.

In January, the embankment wall separating the River Avon New Cut and Cumberland Road collapsed, taking with it the Chocolate Path and the ground underneath the Harbour Railway.

Cumberland Road, the only road that runs from one end of Spike Island to the other, was closed for several weeks.

The knock-on impact was felt for miles around, including bus delays and heavy congestion on Coronation Road. This issue has, however, gone away following the announced lockdown last week.

This morning (March 30), a lane reopened earlier with essential works still scheduled to take place in the other parts of the road.

It is not yet known when the road will fully reopen exactly but Cllr Kye Dudd, the cabinet member for transport, previously said: “Our priority continues to be making sure the area is safe and that Cumberland Road is secure so that it can be reopened in confidence that no further issues will arise.

“Once the road is judged to have been stabilised sufficiently, a decision over whether to partially open it for public transport, including metrobus, and cyclists will be considered."

Bristol City Council has been contacted for comment.
