Culture Date with Dublin 8 returns with over 50 free events

Culture Date with Dublin 8 returning next month with over 50 free events celebrating the social and political history of the area.

The neighbourhood initiative began in 2017 with the goal to remember and celebrate the history of Dublin 8, so that people who are living in the area can get to know the history that is on their doorstep.

Project manager Grace Mcevoy told Dublin Live: "It is a big celebration of Dublin and one of the biggest festivals at the beginning of summer after St Patrick's Day of course. The months of April and May are quite rich in Irish history and with the 1916 Rising and events at Kilmainham Jail having taken place in this area, it is nice to hold the festival at this time of year with that in mind."

There are 30 locations across Dublin 8 with events taking place and there is something for everyone. Grace said: "There has always been something for everyone to enjoy at the Festival, but even more so this year as for the first time we have partnered with all the breweries and distilleries in the area. There are cocktail making classes, a burlesque show, and an outdoor cinema available for adults to enjoy."

As well as a number of events for children, she said there is also a big focus on independent art spaces, as well as visual arts which young people in their twenties or thirties who like art might enjoy.

For history buffs there is a specific strand of the festival to commemorate 100 years since the end of the Irish Civil War. There will be a walking tour marking the notable sites of the war in the city, as well as talks on the topic in Richmond Barracks.

All of the events are free and can be attended by showing up on the day but some are ticketed. Grace said: "I would encourage people to check out the schedule and for any events that are ticketed to book them asap or join a waiting list and for the ones where no ticket is required you can just show up on the day."

Grace said that this festival is important in order for people to recognise the history of Dublin 8. She said: "The festival is about connecting ourselves to an iconic part of Dublins history and about re shaping the concept of Dublin being about more than just Temple Bar and O Connell street."

She said: "We want people to discover hidden gems about this postcode that holds so much importance when it comes to Dublins history. It's about discovering the hidden gems or learning something about a street that you pass every day but never knew was so important."

The festival kicks off on May 13 and 14 and all information about events and the schedule can be found on the Culture Date with Dublin 8 website.
