PITTSBURGH _ Yu Darvish's immediate future looks clouded after he left his minor-league rehabilitation assignment Sunday after only one inning for Class-A South Bend.
Darvish, who hasn't pitched for the Cubs since May 20 because of right triceps tendinitis, allowed one hit, one walk and struck out one against the Great Lakes Loons.
After 19 pitches (10 for strikes), Darvish was replaced by Enrique De Los Rios.
Darvish told reporters he would undergo an MRI but would still like to pitch this season. Darvish said the discomfort was the same as after his previous rehab start on June 24 for South Bend.
Darvish was projected to throw a maximum of three innings and 60 pitches.
This was Darvish's first minor-league rehab start since June 24. Darvish felt discomfort during a bullpen session on June 28, and his rehab was suspended for a few weeks.
This was supposed to be the first of as many as three rehab assignments for Darvish, whom the Cubs hope would return for the stretch drive.
Darvish's ailment further taxes a rotation that currently is without Mike Montgomery due to left shoulder inflammation.
