The suspense over Willson Contreras' appeal to his two-game suspension didn't last long.
The Cubs catcher's punishment for "inappropriate actions, which included the throwing of his mask," was reduced to one game, which he will serve Sunday, the team said.
Saying sorry, both after he was ejected from Friday's game and to umpire Jordan Baker on Saturday, may have helped Contreras' cause.
Contreras, who also was fined, slammed his mask to the ground during an argument with Baker during the Cubs' victory Friday. The mask made contact with Baker's leg and Contreras was ejected.
The two talked briefly before Saturday's game, during which time Contreras apologized.
"Apparently (MLB) reviewed everything and determined that one was good enough, and we're very appreciative of that," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. "I would hope (his apology) would have a part in that but I don't know that."
Cubs pitcher John Lackey also was ejected during the same sequence but was not suspended.
