CINCINNATI _ The Cubs, opening a stretch of 20 games without a day off, rallied from a pair of three-run deficits Tuesday night by scoring nine times in the seventh and eighth innings to pull away to a 13-9 victory over the Reds.
Ben Zobrist, who was scratched from the starting lineup after experiencing transportation problems from his Nashville, Tenn., area home, came off the bench to hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to highlight a four-run seventh.
Javier Baez battled from an 0-2 count to hit a two-run single in the seventh that preceded Zobrist's hit. Alex Avila reached base safely in each of his final four at-bats. Zobrist collected his third RBI on a grounder in the eighth.
Cubs starter John Lackey allowed three runs in the first three innings, and failed to keep the game tied as Eugenio Suarez launched a three-run home run in the fifth.
Hector Rondon induced Adam Duvall to fly to left with the bases loaded to end the sixth. Felix Pena allowed home runs to Jesse Winker and Suarez in the ninth.
One odd note was Anthony Rizzo moving from first base to third base in the ninth inning but had no chances. Rizzo became the first left-handed thrower to play third since Mario Valdez of the White Sox in 1997.
Ian Happ started at second base in place of Zobrist, and Billy Hamilton led off the game with a line drive single past his outstretched glove. Bryant made an impressive backhanded stop at third to retire Zack Cozart with a runner at third to end the second.
