Cubs top Cardinals 5-3 to move into 1st in National League Central

CHICAGO _ The Cubs moved into first place in the National League Central with a 5-3 victory over the Cardinals on Sunday night at Wrigley Field.

Jose Quintana got the victory in his home debut for the Cubs, who won their second game in a row and improved to a season-high five games over .500 at 51-46. Quintana, who was acquired from the Chicago White Sox on July 13, was effective over six innings of work.

Willson Contreras' two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning off Cards starter Michael Wacha was the difference. Kyle Schwarber also homered for the Cubs while Kris Bryant (two hits) and Jason Heyward also knocked in runs.

Randal Grichuk had a two-run homer off Quintana for the Cardinals.

Quintana went six innings and gave up three runs on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Wade Davis earned the save for the Cubs.

Wacha allowed five runs on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts in six innings of work.

Heyward made a leaping catch in deep right on a liner off the bat of the Cardinals' Tommy Pham in the top of the first inning. Later in the first, the Cubs worked a perfect relay from Schwarber to Addison Russell to Contreras to nail Matt Carpenter trying to score on a double by Jedd Gyorko.
