Nov. 27--The possibility still exists that manager Joe Maddon could be reunited with coach Dave Martinez with the Cubs.
Although Martinez told the Tribune on Wednesday that he hadn't thought much about his options since resigning Monday from the Rays after seven seasons as a bench coach, Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer seemed interested in gauging Maddon's interest in Martinez.
"We're going to talk to Joe about it," Hoyer said on the "Kap and Haugh Show" on WGWG-FM 87.7. "Obviously, (Maddon) had a great relationship with Davey (as manager of the Rays). We've talked about him in the past, how strongly he feels about him and what he did for him and trying to replicate that. Obviously now that he's available ... Theo (Epstein) and I really enjoyed our sit-down with him last year during the manager hiring process.
"It's something we'll talk to Joe about. We haven't talked to him yet, but we'll certainly talk to him in the coming days now that he's available."
Martinez, 50, played outfield for the Cubs from 1986 to 1988 and in 2000. Martinez interviewed in October 2013 for the Cubs' managerial position that went to Rick Renteria, but he wasn't named one of the Rays' three finalists for their managerial opening to replace Maddon and elected to resign despite being signed through 2015.
"I honestly can't make a comment," Martinez said after informed of Hoyer's comments. "I haven't talked to anyone. I just want to spend Thanksgiving with my family. I haven't given this much thought so far."
The Tampa Bay Times reported that interested teams will need permission from the Rays to talk to Martinez because he was under contract for 2015 before resigning.
The Cubs have yet to announce their coaching staff, although Brandon Hyde currently serves as the bench coach and Gary Jones, who joined the staff from the Padres organization along with Renteria last season, is the third base coach.
