Kris Bryant was eligible to rejoin the Cubs on Tuesday but could wait as long as Friday.
The latter scenario would provide Bryant, who is recovering from a sore left shoulder, with more rest _ a move that manager Joe Maddon hinted may extend to other players with another day off on Thursday.
For now, Wednesday remains a target date for Bryant's return from the 10-day disabled list after he went through a round of batting practice and baseball drills prior to Tuesday's game against the Tigers.
"We're talking about Wednesday," Maddon said. "Possibly even Friday. Wednesday is the target."
The prognosis was murky, however, for reliever Carl Edwards. Maddon wasn't sure about the next step for Edwards, who allowed two earned runs on two walks and a wild pitch in two-thirds of an inning Monday in his second rehab game for Triple-A Iowa.
In the meantime, Maddon's consideration of more rest for some starting position players coincides with the Cubs' second day off in four days on Thursday.
"If possible, that would be three of four days off," Maddon said. "That's probably more beneficial than the (All-Star) break.
"Rest matters. If you want great performance out of your players, if you want balls in place, less strikeouts, better pitching performances _ make sure you have a rested athlete."
