CHICAGO _ It took the worst conditions and an acute predicament Saturday to arouse a Cubs team facing their third consecutive loss.
Trailing 10-2 after four innings as the wind-chill factor dropped to 25 degrees, the Cubs chipped away with three runs in the sixth and seventh innings and eventually unloading nine runs in the eighth inning to seize a 14-10 victory over the Braves at blustery Wrigley Field.
Javier Baez hit a bases-clearing double, and Kyle Schwarber drew a bases-loaded walk off left-hander Sam Freeman to put the Cubs ahead. Freeman walked Jason Heyward, Schwarber and Tommy La Stella in succession before he was pulled. Peter Moylan relieved Freeman but threw a wild pitch to score Heyward, and catcher Kurt Suzuki committed a throwing error that enabled Schwarber to score.
The late rally took left-hander Jose Quintana off the hook. Quintana lasted only 21/3 innings as he allowed a leadoff home run to Ozzie Albies before his performance declined. Eleven of the first 18 batters reached base safely against Quintana, who was charged with seven runs. Quintana allowed three two-out hits during a three-run second, and he was pulled after allowing three of the first four batters to reach base safely in the third.
Eddie Butler saved a chunk of the bullpen, but he was victimized by errors by Javier Baez and Addison Russell that led to a run in the fourth.
Albert Almora Jr., who was inserted into the lineup after feeling better following a bout of illness, hit a home run in the first.
