CINCINNATI _ Jason Heyward homered and Javier Baez poked an opposite-field grand slam to support six shutout innings by Jose Quintana as the Cubs pulled away Saturday to a 6-0 victory over the Reds at humid Great American Ballpark.
Tensions nearly spilled over in the bottom of the eighth, a half-inning after Baez waved his hand behind his helmet while looking at Reds right fielder Yasiel Puig as he rounded first base.
With a runner at second and the Cubs holding a five-run lead, reliever Pedro Strop sailed a pitch that clipped the back of Puig's leg.
Puig, who rested the bat before the pitch was thrown, yelled at Strop and headed toward the mound, only to be pushed back by Cubs catcher Willson Contreras and later first baseman Anthony Rizzo.
Benches and bullpens emptied, but order was restored with no ejections.
Puig and Strop continued to point at each other before play resumed, with Strop striking out Jose Iglesias and staring briefly at Puig before walking off the field.
Reds manager David Bell was ejected in the bottom of the ninth for arguing with the plate umpire after Cubs reliever Dillon Maples hit Jose Peraza with a pitch and wasn't ejected.
Quintana didn't seem fazed by the heat as he scattered six hits and issued no walks. He put the tying and go-ahead runs on base with two out in the sixth but induced Scooter Gennett to hit a soft fly to left.
Before the game, the Cubs placed pitcher Cole Hamels on the 10-day injured list, recalled right-handers Maples and Rowan Wick from Triple-A Iowa and designated outfielder Carlos Gonzalez for assignment.
Hamels left in the second inning of Friday's loss to the Reds with a left oblique injury.
The addition of Maples and Wick gives the Cubs a nine-man bullpen that probably will last through at least Sunday. Maples pitched a scoreless ninth.
