MESA, Ariz. — The Cubs and right-hander Brandon Workman are have agreed to a one-year deal, per source. The deal is worth $1 million.
Workman was one of MLB’s best relievers in 2019, going 10-1 with a 1.88 ERA in 73 games with the Red Sox. The 32-year-old right-hander struggled in 2020 with a 5.95 ERA in 21 games with the Red Sox and Phillies.
The Cubs and Pedro Strop have also agreed to a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training, per sources. Strop could make $800,000 if he makes the team.
Strop was a staple in the Cubs bullpen during their run of success. From his arrival in Chicago in 2013 to his departure after the 2019 season, the right-hander was one of the most consistent relievers in baseball.
The longtime Cubs’ reliever was 21-24 with a 2.90 ERA across his seven seasons with the Cubs and was a key contributor to their 2016 World Series championship.
Strop was with the Cubs during the 2020 season at the team’s alternate site, but with his velocity never rising to normal levels, he never made an appearance in Chicago.
Both additions to the bullpen became necessary after president Jed Hoyer announced Tuesday that Rowan Wick (intercostal injury) and Kyle Ryan (COVID-19 protocols) would be delayed in their start this spring.
