The Cubs signed veteran Carlos Gonzalez to a minor-league contract Thursday to provide outfield depth.
Gonzalez, who played the last 10 years with the Rockies, was released by the Indians on Sunday. He will report to Triple-A Iowa for a couple of games before a call-up, sources said.
The move will give manager Joe Maddon another left-handed bat off the bench and another corner outfielder with Ben Zobrist's return uncertain.
Jim Adduci is the obvious choice to be demoted when the man nicknamed "CarGo" gets the call.
Gonzalez, 33, hit .210 with two home runs in 30 games for the Indians. He spent most of his career with the Rockies, hitting .290 with 227 home runs over 10 seasons, earning three Gold Gloves and making three All-Star appearances.
His best season came in 2010, when Gonzalez won the National League batting title with a .336 average and finished first in the league in total bases with 351.
