Cubs' Shane Victorino agrees to extended spring training

March 25--Chicago Cubs outfielder Shane Victorino has agreed to continue his rehabilitation in extended spring training in an effort to recover from a low grade 2 left calf strain.

Victorino, 35, said Friday he needs to work out details of a new agreement with the Cubs but emphasized he's grateful for the opportunity to get healthy in hopes of joining the team.

"Basically, we're re-creating spring training for me in a roundabout way to alleviate everybody off the deal and the retention and releasing. We still got to work on it.

"We're talking, and that's a big step."

Victorino originally agreed to a minor league contract that included a base pay of $1 million if he was on the major league roster, plus about $1.2 million in roster bonuses and a $100,000 retention clause.

"At the end of the day, it was about being healthy," said Victorino, who hasn't played in an exhibition game since March 8. "That was the biggest concern. Nobody has told me, 'hey, you're no longer that player.' "

After joining the Cubs on Feb. 26, Victorino hinted that he was unwilling to accept a minor league assignment if he didn't make the opening day roster. But he believes his injury deprived him of showing his skills that made him a valuable 12-year veteran.

"I'm willing to do the process, but we got to work on the basic logistics," Victorino said.
