Cubs sign Rex Brothers, Clayton Richard; tender contracts to 6 players

Dec. 03--The Chicago Cubs signed left-handed pitchers Rex Brothers and Clayton Richard and tendered contracts to six players before Wednesday's 11 p.m. deadline.

Among the players who received contract offers were 2015 National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta and closer Hector Rondon. Also receiving contract offers were relievers Pedro Strop, Justin Grimm and Travis Wood, and outfielder Chris Coghlan. All six are arbitration-eligible players.

Reliever Aaron Cook and left-hander Jack Leathersich, who wasn't on the 40-man roster, were not tendered contracts and can become free agents.

Brothers, who was acquired from the Colorado Rockies last week for minor league pitcher Wander Cabrera, signed a one-year, $1.42 million contract, according to a source.

The Cubs' 40-man roster is at 36.

The Cubs also hired Andy Haines as their minor league hitting coordinator, according to a major league source. Haines, 38, has served as a manager in the Miami Marlins' organization since 2009 and operates a baseball/softball academy in Tennessee.

Haines is a native of Olney and has served as a hitting coach and manager with Independent leagues in Gary and Windy City. Haines will take over the supervision of minor league hitting duties previously held by Anthony Iapoce, who left his position as the special assistant to the General Manager/Player Development to become the hitting coach for the Texas Rangers.
