The Cubs put right-hander Kyle Hendricks on the 10-day injured list with inflammation in his right shoulder. They also called up right-hander Rowan Wick from Class AAA Iowa.
Hendricks said he doesn’t think the injury is serious. He said it didn’t happen on one pitch but rather built up over time. Hendricks first felt it playing catch in recent days, then it worsened during his start Friday, a 5-3 loss to the Dodgers.
“Just didn’t feel right,” he said.
Hendricks lasted only 41⁄3 innings. He allowed five runs and six hits, walked two and struck out one.
Hendricks will be examined by the Cubs’ doctor when they return home. If the injury indeed isn’t serious, a natural timeline would be for him to start again just before or after the All-Star break in three weeks.
With a day off Monday, the Cubs could skip Hendricks’ spot in the next turn through the rotation. They don’t need a fifth starter until June 22 against the Mets. The Cubs are discussing ways to cover Hendricks’ spot, including starting Tyler Chatwood, going with a four-man rotation and using spot starter(s).
