Cubs plan to honor Rio medalist Conor Dwyer at Wrigley Field

First a bronze medal on Monday night.

Then a chance for gold Tuesday night.

And when Winnetka, Ill., swimmer Conor Dwyer returns to Chicago after the Rio Olympics, he'll be honored again: The Cubs plan to invite him to toss the first pitch at Wrigley before an upcoming game, a team official said Tuesday.

Dwyer's medals in Rio weren't his first Olympics hardware. He won gold and bronze four years ago in London.

And this won't be the first time he's tossed that ceremonial ball at Wrigley either; he did it alongside fellow gold medalist Cullen Jones in 2015.

Dwyer says he is a huge Cubs fan; he's friends with Anthony Rizzo.

In fact, that allegiance runs in his blood. His grandfather, Jim Dowdle, helped run the Cubs when he was executive vice president at Tribune Co., which owned the team before selling it to the Ricketts family.

Monday night, Dwyer took third in the 200-meter freestyle. That followed a disappointing fourth Saturday in the 400 freestyle.

He is schedule to swim again Tuesday night in the 800-meter freestyle relay.

After that, he can start working on his fastball.
