The Cubs placed right-hander Tyler Chatwood on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Aug. 13, with a mid-back strain. Chatwood missed his scheduled start on Friday after experiencing mid-back tightness hours before the game.

Chatwood’s status improved on Saturday as he played catch and looked to be in line to start Monday vs. the Cardinals. The back tightened again on Sunday, forcing the Cubs to send him to the IL.

Chatwood, 30, is 2-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three starts with the Cubs this season.

In a corresponding move, the Cubs recalled right-handed reliever Jason Adam from alternate site South Bend. Right-hander Jharel Cotton has been designated for assignment to make room for Adam on the team’s 40-man roster.

The team’s 60-man player pool now stands at 58 players, with 28 active players (plus four 10-day injured list players) in Chicago and 26 players in South Bend.

The Cubs will have their starting pitching depth stretched with two doubleheaders this week against the Cardinals and now two starters on the IL.

Right-hander Kyle Hendricks will now start Game 1 of Monday’s doubleheader against St. Louis. The starter for Game 2 is still to be determined.

Heyward out with back tightness

Right fielder Jason Heyward was scratched from the lineup be Sunday’s game against the Brewers with mid-back tightness. Heyward has turned it up over the last week, hitting .350 with a home run, six RBIs, four walks and a 1.040 OPS.
