CHICAGO _ The Cubs have been looking for an opportunity to give Mike Montgomery a start and found it when the team placed right-hander Kyle Hendricks on the 10-day disabled list prior to Thursday night's game against the Colorado Rockies at Wrigley Field.
Hendricks' placement on the DL for tendinitis on the back of his right hand is retroactive to Monday and the veteran is expected to make a start against the Pirates some time when the Cubs are in Pittsburgh on June 16-18.
"It's something that we do not think is serious or long term and that (Hendricks) will miss this start (and) we expect him to be available at some point in the Pittsburgh series," Cubs President Theo Epstein said.
With Hendricks sidelined, Montgomery will start in his place against the Rockies on Friday afternoon.
(Montgomery) has been stretched out a little bit ... so we feel good about that," manager Joe Maddon said. "We've been talking about getting Montgomery a start and there it is."
The Cubs recalled right-handed pitcher Seth Frankoff from Triple-A Iowa and he was available Thursday night against the Rockies.
To make room for Frankoff on the 40-man roster, veteran left-hander pitcher Brett Anderson was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
