The Chicago Cubs placed pitcher Jason Hammel on the bereavement list and recalled reliever Justin Grimm from Triple-A Iowa prior to Wednesday's game against the Miami Marlins.
Hammel left to attend a family matter. He must spend a minimum of three days on the list. He isn't expected to make his next start until Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels.
Grimm was recalled to aid a bullpen that could be fatigued at the back end. Pedro Strop, Hector Rondon and Aroldis Chapman were used in Tuesday's 3-2 win.
