Cubs place Chris Coghlan on DL, promote Jeimer Candelario

NEW YORK _ The Cubs placed outfielder Chris Coghlan on the 15-day disabled list due to right rib cage soreness.

Switch-hitting infielder Jeimer Candelario was promoted from Triple-A Iowa and started at third base in Sunday's series finale against the New York Mets.

Coghlan felt increasing discomfort Saturday after one plate appearance in a 4-3 loss. He said he tried to play through the tightness but hurt it on a checked swing in his first at-bat against Bartolo Colon.

Infielder Tommy La Stella is still experiencing soreness in his right hamstring after games while on a rehab assignment with Iowa.

"We just felt we wanted to stay with Tommy's rehab assignment," manager Joe Maddon said. "It wasn't quite there yet."

Candelario, 22, a New York native, batted .333 with three home runs and 15 RBIs in 25 games at Iowa. Candelario made a strong impression on Maddon by batting .350 with three home runs in spring training.

"He's a very interesting player," Maddon said. "Switch hitter, has pop from both sides, a nice approach at home plate."

Maddon received a favorable defensive report on Candelario from roving minor league infield coordinator Jose Flores.

"He's made a lot of strides, especially with slow roller coming in, he's strong fielding on his backhand side," Maddon reported. "Defensively, he continues to get better and improves. He's a young kid with a great body and great upside."
