Cubs' Pedro Strop cut short a clubhouse visit from cops about his stolen car: 'I gotta pitch'

CHICAGO _ Cubs closer Pedro Strop's car was stolen from his Gold Coast garage Wednesday and was later involved in an accident as the thief fled a traffic stop, authorities said.

Strop said he was still dealing with police during the evening game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, talking with officers in the clubhouse. When the score became tied, Strop told them, "I gotta get out of here, I gotta pitch tonight," according to Cubs spokesman Julian Green.

Strop ended up securing a save in the Cubs' 7-6 win.

Strop had reported his 2018 Hyundai Genesis stolen earlier Wednesday, telling police it was taken from his garage in the 300 block of East Ohio Street around 6:30 a.m., based on surveillance footage. Around 2:30 p.m., officers tried to pull the car over in the 7100 block of South State Street, but it took off.

The car was later found in the 7100 block of South Vincennes Avenue _ less than half a mile away _ after it struck a parked car. Police said no one was injured and no one was in custody.

Strop was asked about the clubhouse visit from police when he arrived at Wrigley Field on Thursday.

"I knew you were going to go there," Strop said, laughing. "Just hear what the police had to say. Kinda find out what ... the condition of my car. That's what I wanted to know yesterday."

He said the car was "stolen from a parking lot of an apartment where I'm staying." Strop said he didn't know much else, but police told him the car will be "under investigation for at least 10 days."
