The Cubs will option Nico Hoerner and give Eric Sogard a roster spot, according to ESPN. Hoerner had been part of the second-base competition in spring training, which also includes David Bote and Ildemaro Vargas.
ESPN reported that service-time considerations played a role in the decision. If Hoerner is in the minors for 36 days, the Cubs can retain him for an extra year.
Many observers think Hoerner has been the Cubs’ best second baseman in camp. He has a 1.039 OPS and is tied for second on the team with three stolen bases. He was a Gold Glove finalist at second base in 2020.
