CHICAGO _ Anthony Rizzo returned Tuesday night under chilly temperatures, but Ben Zobrist was scratched from the lineup as the Cubs found themselves struggling to muster enough resources against the rival Cardinals and nemesis Adam Wainwright.
Tyler Chatwood couldn't overcome control problems in low 30-degree weather Tuesday night as the Cubs fell to the Cardinals 5-3 at Wrigley Field.
The Cubs stayed within striking distance through the first seven innings despite five walks in the first three innings by Chatwood. Back-to-back walks to Dexter Fowler and Tommy Pham to start the third set up an RBI double by Matt Carpenter, and a grounder by Marcell Ozuna scored Pham.
Chatwood pitched out of trouble in the second by striking out Greg Garcia, Paul DeJong and Wainwright with runners at first and second. Chatwood struck out seven but walked seven in 4 2/3 innings.
But in the eighth, DeJong smacked his fifth home run off reliever Pedro Strop, and Carpenter hit a two-run single with the bases loaded.
Those runs loomed large after Javier Baez hit a two-run home run off Greg Holland in the bottom of the eighth. The homer was Baez's fifth in his last six games.
The Cubs were 4-4 while Rizzo was on the disabled list with tightness in his lower back. Rizzo was struck by a soft breaking pitch from Wainwright in his first at-bat.
Zobrist was scheduled to bat leadoff until he was removed about an hour before the game.
The Cubs brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Kyle Schwarber struck out.
Wainwright improved to 15-9 lifetime against the Cubs after giving up four hits, one run and striking out five in five innings.
