Cubs look for the bear necessi-trees as they clamber up trunks to impress mum

Bear cubs learn how to climb trees as their mother watches on in this incredible nature photo.

One brown bear cub appears to have mastered the art as it was able to climb 15ft while another only made it a few feet off the ground.

These shots were taken at Martinselkonen, a wilderness site in eastern Finland popular for bear watching.

Valtteri Mulkahainen, 58, who took the snap in Finland, said: “It was like a nursery class.”

Mr Mulkahainen, a high school teacher from Sotkamo village in Finland, watched on from a nearby lodge as the young bears, which were born last winter, were playing at dinner time.

He said there were two mother bears who had three cubs each.

Mr Mulkahainen said: “The cubs were playing with each other in the field and then two of the little cubs started teasing the smallest one.

“They made it climb up the tree and weren’t letting it down but the adult bear was alert to this so made all the cubs climb the trees.

“The female bear was observing the area to be sure the cubs were safe and out of harm. She remained near her cubs all the time.

“It was very interesting watching the mother protect her cubs, it was like us humans protecting our kids from danger."
