Cubs' Javier Baez leaves game with left hamstring tightness

MESA, Ariz. _ Cubs second baseman Javier Baez left Thursday's game in the second inning after experiencing tightness in his left hamstring.

Baez grabbed his leg after rounding first base after hitting a two-run double off Padres starter Jordan Lyles.

Baez limped into second base and signaled immediately for medical assistance and left the ballpark to be evaluated.

Chesny Young pinch-ran for Baez.

If Baez is out for an extended period, the Cubs could take a longer look at Ben Zobrist and Tommy La Stella at second. Ian Happ, who has played extensively in the outfield, also has experience at second.

In the top of the third, Young clipped first baseman Anthony Rizzo as the two chased a foul ball by Wil Myers. Rizzo fell down but held onto the ball as Young was shaken up and was lifted for pinch-hitter Ryan Court in the bottom of the third.

Before the game, the Cubs announced backup catcher candidate Taylor Davis is sidelined indefinitely because of a concussion.

Davis, who delivered a key hit last September that knocked the rival St. Louis Cardinals from playoff contention, revealed that he suffered the concussion Friday after getting hit by a foul tip while catching live batting practice.

Davis said Thursday that he has been hit before, "but nothing like this."

Davis added that he wasn't able to eat a full meal until Wednesday and has performed limited work this week. Davis is batting .300 (3 for 10) with a home run this spring.

Victor Caratini, who is competing for the backup catching spot, will start when the Cubs play the San Diego Padres at Sloan Park.
