Cubs Game Day: Reds win 5-4 in 10 innings

June 13--Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon had said he "likes the vibe" of his team these days, and what manager wouldn't after seeing his team win four of its previous five.

But the Reds slowed down that vibe with a 5-4 victory in 10 innings Friday in front of 40,016 fans at Wrigley Field, the largest home crowd of the year for the Cubs.

Errors by rookie infielders Addison Russell in the first inning and Kris Bryant in the 10th allowed the Reds to score three unearned runs.

The Cubs had won the series-opener Thursday night, 6-3.

On Friday, the Reds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after second baseman Russell botched a routine grounder off the bat of Skip Schumaker. Doubles by Ivan De Jesus Jr. and Todd Frazier, as well as a single by Bryan Pena drove in runs. Two of the three runs were unearned.

Righthanders Jason Hammel (5-2, 2.76) and Johnny Cueto (4-4, 2.64) started off facing each other as overcast clouds and light drizzle prevented the teams from taking batting practice.

The Cubs mounted a two-out rally in the second inning to pull within 3-2. Hammel delivered an RBI single before Russell drove him in with a double.

The Reds answered in the third inning as Frazier hit his 18th homer of the year to make it 4-2.

Starlin Castro hit a two-run homer in the sixth to tie the game 4-4.

The Cubs entered the game 16-11 at Wrigley Field, which was the fourth-best home record in the National League. The NL Central-leading Cardinals lead with a 22-7 home mark.
